NEWSLETTER
December 6, 2004
Greetings everyone, and
Happy Holidays. It's been a long time since we've sent out a newsletter
about our photography workshops, but that's because Michelle and
I have been very busy here in the office! Let me take this chance
to update you on a few things that have been going on.
GIFT CERTIFICATES
We offer gift certificates year round, available to be given out
as birthday presents, retirement gifts, graduation presents and
so forth. We ask that if you want to purchase one for Christmas
this year PLEASE DO SO BY DECEMBER 21. That will
give us time to make, laminate and mail the certificate to you.
Rush charges may apply if the item needs to go FedEx.
DAVID MUENCH WORKSHOP MOVED
The Hunt's Mesa & Monument Valley workshop with David Muench
has moved. THE NEW DATES ARE MAY 8-12, 2005. The
workshop is not suited for those who need fundamental instruction.
Rather this trip is for those who want to explore the creative side
of photography, since David is best known for teaching artistic
expression. The first night will be spent in Kayenta and one night
will be spent camping atop Hunt's Mesa in tents, with food and gear
provided by our professional outfitters. The last two evenings will
be at Goulding's Lodge near the entrance to Monument Valley. Space
is still available, so register now if you want to visit
these extraordinary locations. Click here for more information:

MY WORLD PROJECT
For those of you who have yet to take a workshop with him, we can
tell you that LeRoy DeJolie is an
outstanding Arizona Highways photographer, and is also
one of the friendliest and most talkative Navajo you're ever likely
to meet. Part of what makes LeRoy a great instructor on our workshops
is his ability to instill in his students the same passion
for photography he has. Earlier in the year, Friends of
Arizona Highways donated $2,500 to LeRoy's "My World"
project.
The "My World" project has existed for the past two years.
On his own time and mostly on his own dime, LeRoy has taught photography
to underprivileged Navajo children from around
the Reservation. Our recent gift allowed him to buy some cameras
for the students, and the remaining money will help with future
needs like transportation, snacks and other supplies. Several young
participants in LeRoy's project had work auctioned off to help raise
money for the Children's Action Alliance earlier this year.
It feels good to contribute to such a worthy cause, which fits perfectly
with our non-profit mission of helping to promote photographic education.
We hope our participants also feel good knowing that part of their
workshop fees go to fund such works.
By the way, look for LeRoy's book called "NavajoLand:
A Native Son Shares His Legacy" to be published by
Arizona Highways early next year. He also has two workshops
with us: Navajo Lands &
People and Arches of the Southwest
SALVATION ARMY
The Salvation Army will be feeding homeless and low-income residents
of Phoenix a wonderful meal at the Phoenix Civic Center on Christmas
Day. A group of our volunteers will be on hand at a number of photography
and printer stations to take and distribute holiday photographs
of the families in attendance. We're expecting between 2,000 to
2,500 portrait set-ups, with 5,000 people there to take part in
the meal. Some of these people have never had a photograph of their
family to call their own, and it brings us great joy to say we will
be able to help with this year's event. If you know anyone who could
help sponsor the event with printer ink or 4x6" glossy photo
paper… please give us a holler. And wish us luck!
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Some of you may have noticed that our group, Friends of Arizona
Highways, is doing business as Arizona Highways Photo Workshops.
As you may know, in most instances our workshops are lead by photographers
who are published in Arizona Highways magazine. While Friends
remains the corporate name, we thought it appropriate to emphasize
our close ties to Arizona Highways magazine by re-branding
ourselves somewhat. So while you may see us listed under both names,
please rest assured we're the same group!
On behalf of myself, Michelle Pelberg, our Board of Directors and
our other volunteers, I wish you a peaceful, happy holiday season.
