NEWSLETTER
January 5, 2005
This New Year, our hearts
are heavy with sorrow for the victims of the tsunami that has claimed
so many lives. The continuing devastation to the countries affected
is hard to fathom, and we can only hope that those close to you
are safe, and that 2005 will be a time of healing and rebuilding.
Our hearts and thoughts go out to you if anyone you know has been
personally touched by this tragedy.
SALVATION ARMY
Here at Friends of Arizona Highways we feel blessed to have spent
our holidays helping others. On Christmas Day, a few of our volunteers
went down to the Salvation Army dinner at the Civic Center to photograph
elderly, homeless and low-income families. Many had never had pictures
of themselves taken before, and we were immediately swamped at the
six photo stations, as well as at the 12 printer stations we were
using to deliver the photographs. This year's event was all digital,
and it was one of the most heart-warming experiences to have the
children smiling and giggling when they had a chance to see themselves
in the backs of the digital cameras. The event went well and we
were able to deliver a few thousand photos in just a few hours.

BOSQUE & WHITE SANDS WITH DAVID MUENCH
Due to a last-minute cancellation on the part of one of our participants,
we have one space open on the Bosque & White Sands workshop
in New Mexico January 22-26, 2005. We realize it's short notice,
but if you're interested please give us a call at 1-888-790-7042.
It's a toll-free call. You can see more about the workshop online:

ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS
Did you get a new camera for Christmas and now need to know how
to use it? Maybe you've had a camera for a while and just need a
refresher course on what all the knobs and buttons do. We have two
classes, both just $65, that can help:

SPRING WORKSHOPS
Arizona has been inundated lately with some truly incredible El
Nino rains. That means this spring we should have all kinds of desert
wildflowers. If you'd like to learn some terrific places to go and
some tips on how to photograph these flowers, try one of our Spring
Wildflowers of the Superstitions workshops on either March
12 or March 19. More information can be found here:

And don't forget that registration deadlines are fast approaching
for our other spring workshops. Don't miss out on one of these unique
Arizona adventures!

PHOTO EXHIBIT
Friends' volunteers work hard, are highly valued members of the
organization and are often talented photographers in their own rights.
Many of you have hopefully had them facilitate a worry-free experience
on our workshops. We are excited to announce that the Phoenix City
Grille has graciously allowed some volunteers to display and sell
work, and 20% of the proceeds will be returned to help fund the
non-profit activities of our organization. If any of you are in
the neighborhood, stop by the Grille and see the show at at 5816
N. 16th Street, on the southwest corner of 16th Street and Bethany
Home Road, Phoenix. Also be sure to check out the online galleries
for our volunteers, photographers and participants:

That's it for now. I should have another update for you next month.
Until then, on behalf of myself, Michelle Pelberg, our Board of
Directors and our other volunteers, I wish you a Happy New Year!
