I hope you all had a terrific
Memorial Day earlier in the week. Our hearts go out to those of
you who were honoring fallen family members, especially if it was
for the first time. For the rest of you, I hope you got a chance
to barbecue, go to the beach or do something else fun. Speaking
of fun! We have a number of unique workshops coming up, and have
enclosed some information about them below that you might find useful.
There are also more Tips from the Pros for you to enjoy at the end
of the newsletter. We appreciate your continuing interest in our
photo workshops.
CHIRICAHUAS
IN AUTUMN ,
Nov. 5-9, 2005
The legendary leader of the Chiricahua Apaches in the mid-1800s
was a warrior they called Cochise. His name alone was enough to
strike terror into many of southeastern Arizona's settlers and soldiers.
Yet apparently his name, which was so terrifying, was not a tribute
to his skills in battle, but rather came from the word Goci meaning
"his nose," a reference to the leaderâ€Ts most prominent
feature!
Cochise is remembered to this day by having one of the Chiricahua
Mountains of southeastern Arizona named for him. "Cochise Head"
resembles a reclining face, complete with forehead, lips and a somewhat
prominent nose. Every few years, Arizona Highways Photo Workshops
goes to the Chiricahuas to take pictures of Cochise Head and the
other fabulous rock formations in nearby Chiricahua National Monument.
We also explore the fall color on the eastern side of the Chiricahuas.
Our next trip there runs this November and is led by Arizona Highways
Director of Photography Peter Ensenberger. For more information

YELLOWSTONE
WORKSHOP , Jan. 19-25, 2006
We finally got our transportation issues sorted out and have put
a price on the Yellowstone workshop of $2,950, based on double occupancy.
It is an additional $350 for a single room.
During our trip we'll be spending two nights at Cooke City, two
nights in Gardiner and two at the fabulous Snow Lodge near Old Faithful
geyser. We'll use those as jumping off points into the Lamar Valley,
Mammoth Hot Springs and Upper Geyser basins, photographing the majestic
scenery of Yellowstone in all its winter glory. Animals are abundant
at this time of year except for those of the human variety, making
it an ideal time to take photographs. The link to the itinerary
can be found at the bottom of the description page:
http://www.friendsofazhighways.com/workshops/06Yellowstone.htm
We also invite you to visit photographer Henry Holdsworth's outstanding
website for more information about the leader of this trip: http://www.wildbynaturegallery.com/
There are only a few spaces left, so please call us as soon as possible
if you want to go. Sorry, but there will be no discounts available
on this workshop.
PHOTOS NEEDED
It's that time of year again! We are developing next year's schedule
and need photographs to use in our brochure and on our website.
While we'll have a number of new workshops on the schedule, we'll
of course have some of our "tried and true" workshops, too, so if
you've been on any of our trips we encourage you to submit. We're
always on the lookout for good photos of Monument Valley, Canyon
de Chelly, the Slot Canyons, the Grand Canyon (be sure to note which
Rim it came from), Havasupai, Rafting the Colorado River, Hunt's
Mesa and the Tetons, just to name a few.
If you would like to submit photos please either call us so we can
send you a submission form, or you can print one from this page
on our website: http://www.friendsofazhighways.com/res_forms.htm
THE NAME REMAINS THE SAME
There were no winners in our recent name-the-newsletter contest.
We will continue with the current name and perhaps re-open the contest
at a later date. Our thanks go out to those of you who submitted
suggestions. "Zona Bokeh" gets my vote as the most creative. :-)
TIPS FROM THE PROS
Jerry Sieve, who is the instructor on the Summer Storms workshop
this August, has some tips posted on his website that he would like
to share with you. Follow this link for a lesson in pre-visualization:

SAGUARO BLOSSOMS
Saguaro blossoms have been blooming for the last several weeks here
in Arizona. Reports are that Tucson's Saguaro National Parks, both
East and West, are tremendous places to see them, as is the drive
along the Beeline Highway north of Fountain Hills and the drive
up I-17 from Phoenix to New River. Last weekend many had already
burned off, but many were still about to bloom, so those of you
who are in the area may want to go out into the field and check
it out before it's too late!
We'll be back again next month with more news and tidbits. See you
then.
Kind regards,
