NEWSLETTER
September 6, 2006
Unexpected events this summer and early fall have put us behind by a few weeks on production of next year’s schedule. That means the 2007 brochure won’t be coming out until November. However we hope to have the schedule posted online by mid-October. In the meantime, you might want to check out the two workshops that have been up on our website for a while already.
PHOTOGRAPHER’S WHALES AND WILDLIFE CRUISE
January 13-20, 2007
The Sea of Cortés and Baja hold many wonders - some of which are found nowhere else on earth. Photography and camera lovers will be amazed at the diversity of images possible while visiting this spectacular area. Joining you on the cruise is Arizona Highways photographer Kerrick James, who as guest lecturer onboard will offer suggestions on unique places to take pictures, will present slide-show seminars, and will be on hand to answer guests’ photography questions.
Unlike most of our trips, this really is more of a photo tour. There will not be any critique sessions, although digital photographers can feel free to have Kerrick review their work in the field and ask for tips on composition and exposure. There will be some handouts on lighting, composition, etc.
Trip details are here:

For this special trip we ask that you book your reservation through Cruise West. Call them toll-free at 1-888-364-1812.
RAFTING THE GRAND CANYON
May 2-13, 2007
This workshop consistently gets rave reviews from those who attend. Two days of classroom instruction precede ten days on the Colorado River as it surges and saunters its way through the depths of the Grand Canyon. Check it out online, but if you want to go, we recommend you register SOON. This one’s been posted for a while and is already over half full.

AIRPORT CARRY-ON RESTRICTIONS
Recent world events have caused certain restrictions in airline carry-ons. With a multitude of fall workshops coming up, we wanted to remind you again that you can ship film to our office in preparation for your trip. You can still get your film hand-checked and carry it onboard the plane, but if you want another option you can send the film to:
Robyn Noll
Arizona Highways Photo Workshops
2039 W. Lewis Ave.
Phoenix, AZ 85009
Be sure to put your name - and the name of your workshop - somewhere on the package, and to get it to the office at least a week before your workshop begins. Your trip escort will make sure it gets to you.

ARIZONA HIGHWAYS GARNERS MORE AWARDS
We like to brag about Arizona Highways magazine and its many accomplishments. At the International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) conference in Duluth, Minnesota on September 12 the magazine was recognized as Magazine of the Year. In fact they won top awards in every category, including writing, photography and design.
Besides producing an outstanding magazine, Arizona Highways has a terrific line of calendars, books and Southwestern themed gifts. If you want to get their Holiday 2006 gift catalog, send an email to:

SUBMITTING PHOTOS FROM OUR WORKSHOPS
We're always looking for photos for our website, brochure and itineraries. We do not pay for the use of photographs, but we will do our best to include a photographic credit. You can either send us your original transparencies, a CD, or a DVD with your photos. Please send no more than eight (8) images per workshop you've attended. We will return transparencies after scanning, but we do not return CDs or DVDs unless it's requested.
We ask for the following when sending a digital submission:
- Acceptable file formats are TIF or JPG.
- File size should be 300 dpi with the long dimension about 7 inches long
(about 2100 dpi). This equates to a file that is about 8MB. Files that are
larger may be returned to sender, as they take too long to load on our
computers.
- Please submit 8-bit photos rather than 16-bit.
- Enhance your photos before submitting them if they need it. What you
submit should be a final product, not one that still requires a lot of level
or color adjustment.
- Do not submit photos with layers. If you do some enhancing work, flatten the layers before submitting the image.
- Name your photos appropriately so that they can be distinguished from those of your fellow students. The preferred format is:
- FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME_description.extension. Here is an example: JOHN_DOE_monumentvalley.jpg
- Download, fill out and submit an Image submission form to accompany your photos. See http://www.friendsofazhighways.com/Image_submission.pdf
For more information on the image submission process or if you have any other questions, please call the office at (602) 712-2004 or toll-free (888) 790-7042.
