NEWSLETTER
June 17 , 2008
Hi folks. This spring was busier than ever, with eleven workshops launched within a seven week window, and I’m happy to report that the reviews of the trips have been the best I’ve ever seen. We hope that those of you who joined us got some exceptional photos. My thanks go out to our photographers, volunteers and staff for all their hard work making the spring trips so successful.
It’s the time of year when we develop our 2009 schedule, and I’ll be working on the brochure in late July and throughout August. If you recently attended a workshop and would like to have your photos considered for inclusion in the brochure or on the website, please print off this form to send with your submission. The form includes formatting information and mailing instructions:

ARIZONA HIGHWAYS PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
We wanted to tell you in advance to keep an eye out for the September issue of Arizona Highways magazine. The issue is devoted to photography, with big spreads by Jack Dykinga, George Stocking and Joel Grimes, plus it has an article written by one of your fellow students, Ann Collins, which also features some of her photographs. There will also be an announcement of the inaugural Arizona Highways Photo Contest, with four submission categories. Contest details will be posted on their website starting in mid-August:

Be sure to check it out!
ANOTHER PHOTO CONTEST
Outdoor Photographer has a different sort of photo contest going on right now. It’s called the “Top 100 Iconic Photo Locations of the World” contest, and the entry deadline is August 1, 2008. Here’s the link to that one. Good luck to those who enter!

THINK TANK PHOTO
We recently joined into a partnership with Think Tank Photo. For those of you unfamiliar with Think Tank, they make great camera bags, hip packs, rolling carts and modular belt systems. The company was started a few years ago by some professional photographers interested in designing camera bags to help photographers “ travel easier, take pictures faster, and organize their gear more efficiently.”
As part of our partnership, students will receive for free one of several bags of their choosing with an order of $50 or more. Visit their website at http://www.thinktankphoto.com/workshop and enter code “WS-156” on the first screen. You’ll have to allow pop-ups on your computer for this to work properly. You’ll see a list of a lot of items, go ahead and click on PRODUCTS if you haven’t looked through their site yet to figure out what you might like.
Or alternatively you can visit their website, http://thinktankphoto.com/, and make a list of what you like and then visit the workshop site to enter the code and proceed with your order.
POST-WORKSHOP CRITIQUES ONLINE
Try as we might, we’re not getting a lot of people to post their photos for sharing and critique after their workshops end. We have a site set up for this on MyPhotoAlbum and some students utilize it, but others do not even after multiple reminders. We know time is scarce for many of you and it’s hard to find the time to work on photos when your trip ends but we will discontinue this program unless we have more people take advantage of it.
I guess the question is, is sharing photos after the trip and getting feedback on some by the photographer a service you want?
If so, what prevents you from posting photos?
If you have utilized the site what sort of feedback can you provide on its utility?
Is the site difficult to navigate, and if so what site would you recommend?
We went with MyPhotoAlbum because some sharing sites don’t let commercial groups post, and we can also password protect the site so no one but students have access to the photos, reducing the chances your photos would be used for a purpose you don’t intend. We’re open to changing, though, if there’s a better solution out there. I’d love to hear your thoughts, but please be aware I’ll be gone starting Friday June 20th until July 9th and may not get your email right away. We’ll try to summarize responses in the July or August newsletter.
Happy shooting,
Robyn Noll
