Hello, folks. We hope you’re having a terrific spring and that you’ve been able to grab your cameras and get out in the field. Here’s the latest news.
SPACES STILL AVAILABLE
We’ve sold out nine workshops so far this year, and spaces are dwindling on the remaining trips. If you find yourself with some time this spring and want to go on a workshop we do have a few spaces left:
Slot Canyons, May 11-15 (1 space left)
http://friendsofazhighways.com/workshops/08SlotCanyons.htm
The slots are simply amazing and people always come back with stunning images from this workshop.
Havasupai, May 15-19 (multiple spaces left)
http://friendsofazhighways.com/workshops/08Havasupai.htm
I encourage anyone who’s never been to Havasupai to visit there at least once. Our outfitters set up a comfortable camp near three of the area’s spectacular waterfalls. From there you’ll make multiple trips to Navajo, Mooney and Havasu Falls, can venture out along the tree-lined creek, and wade in the cool spring water while the temperature is in the 80s and 90s. This year we’re hoping spring rains have set the stage for terrific cactus blooms, too!
Coastal Redwoods, May 28-June 1 (4 spaces left)
http://friendsofazhighways.com/workshops/08Redwoods.htm
This may be the last time we offer the Redwoods trip. The start location is hard to get to for many people, but the workshop itself is incredible and the instructor, George Stocking, has formed quite a following of students who like his teaching style and dedication.
TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES
We recently purchased some new laptops and digital projectors for our workshops. Our volunteers will go through a technical training class in the next month so they’ll be sure to know how to operate the new equipment. The projectors have better color and tonal range than previously, and eventually the laptops will be loaded with goodies such as Lightroom and Photoshop CS3. We hope the upgrades make your critique and classroom sessions even better than before.
NEW EMPLOYEE
Please join me in welcoming Ashley Schutt to the Friends office. Ashley is our new Reservations Coordinator and Executive Assistant. She’ll be handling our lodging and transportation bookings, as well as helping with other office work. She has a background in organizational management and already has a lot of great ideas on how to make the office run more smoothly. This marks the first time Friends has had three full-time employees, which is a tribute to the growth we’ve experienced in the last few years. If a new voice answers the phone next time you call in, it may be Ashley, so please say hi!
WEIRD LINKS?
In order to track how many people read these newsletters, you may see that some of the links forward you momentarily to an outside website. If “YMLP” pops up it’s just a tally mark on the “Your Mailing List Provider” site that tells them how many people visited, and you’ll be immediately redirected to the website you click on.
A separate issue happened during the last email newsletter. When we transitioned to an HTML newsletter our “WYSIWYG” HTML program mucked up the links and they redirected to the Arizona Department of Transportation website. That was a mistake, and I think I’ve now fixed the problem. Thanks for all of you who wrote in to point out the error.
SHARING PHOTOS
Suzanne Mathia has an outstanding photo collection of the Lake Powell area posted online. Some of these photos were taken on our Preposterous Landscapes workshop. Check out her fabulous images:

And if it inspires you to visit, we still have two spaces left on the Preposterous Landscapes workshop:

Thanks as always for your interest in the workshops, and we hope to see or talk to you soon.
