Kudos to Contest Winners!

CONGRATULATIONS to Marge Beauvais for being selected as the Grand Prize winner of the Chihuly: Nature of Glass Photo Contest! The contest was sponsored by Arizona Highways magazine, Desert Botanical Garden and the Friends of Arizona Highways.

© Marge Beauvais

The winning entry, titled “Wonder Filled Evening at Desert Botanical Gardens,” was chosen by glass artist Dale Chihuly from 10 finalists that were narrowed down from nearly 5,000 very competitive entries. Chihuly commented that the pink Fiori image has wonderful composition and is a great mix of both the artwork and the desert environment. Marge’s entry won her an Arizona Highways Photo Workshop to Monument Valley/Canyon De Chelly.

Congratulations also go out to Rick Senffner, who won a Slot Canyon Photo Workshop. His name was selected from several hundred entries at the Arizona Highways Photo Workshop booth during the Arizona Highways Travel Show weekend, May 30-31, 2009.

And one more … congratulations to Bob Hall for his winning bid at the Arizona Audubon auction. He will be going on the Arizona Highways Photo Workshop to Bosque and White Sands. We offer our special thanks to Bob for his contribution to the Arizona Audubon Society and for bidding on this great photo workshop!

Summer in the High Country
with Peter Ensenberger
August 7-10, 2009

Find out more about this workshop and view itinerary...

The White Mountains of eastern Arizona offer a picturesque location for a summer retreat from the heat. Cool temperatures, clean mountain air and afternoon showers are part of daily life in this high country paradise getaway. Those who live there call it “God’s Country.”

Workshop instructor, Arizona Highways Director of Photography Peter Ensenberger, knows the secrets of this area from many days spent traveling the back roads and hiking the trails. Discover the natural wonders of the White Mountains, where shooting locations may include the Mt. Baldy Wilderness, Little Colorado River, Three Forks of the Black River, Bear Wallow Wilderness and more. With an active monsoon season, you’ll see dramatic towering thunderheads accentuating deep blue skies.

The Hannagan Meadow Lodge and cabins will be your base of operations for exploring the pine and aspen forests, lush meadows, babbling streams and placid high-country lakes of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Beautiful Hannagan Meadow is just across the road from the lodge, where most evenings elk and deer come out into the meadow to graze and play. And, the rustic pole fence around the meadow creates a perfect foreground for pastoral scenes on foggy mornings. Expect to see plenty of wildlife and if the summer storms are active, you could find plenty of colorful mountain wildflowers in bloom.

Time is running out ... call now to reserve your space in the cool high-country this summer!

August 14 - 17, 2009

Learning how to use image-editing programs to enhance digital photos or scans isn’t always easy. There can be a steep learning curve just to be able to handle basic workflow. This workshop will help take the mystery out of the process, giving you tools you can take home and immediately start using to achieve consistently good results.

It begins with visits to the Grand Canyon’s most scenic South Rim viewpoints for glorious sunrises and sunsets to create images for you to use in class. Expert Grand Canyon photographer Gary Ladd has timed this workshop anticipating dramatic stormlight at the canyon, and will be your instructor during photo sessions to guide you to the best locations.

During class time in the afternoon Photoshop expert Steve Burger will take over, showing you easy step-by-step adjustments to maximize the impact of your photographs. An accomplished printmaker, he’ll also show you how to make great prints from your images. Lessons are taught in a casual classroom setting with scheduled lectures and free lab time. Each student will receive a take-home copy of the instruction book developed by Steve and used in his Photoshop classes, as well as a 16x20 print of their favorite image.

This class is useful for novice and advanced Photoshop users, though students should have basic computer experience to facilitate instruction during lab time.

Fall Color of the Grand Tetons
with Henry Holdsworth
September 25-29, 2009

Find out more about this workshop and view itinerary...

Grand Teton National Park is spectacular at any time of year, but in autumn the transformation of the Teton Range is something special to behold. Dense and colorful aspen forests line the mountainsides, lending a golden contrast to the bright blue skies and crystal clear lakes. Summer’s lush green meadows transition to fall’s tawny, frost-covered glades as the landscape prepares for winter.

From Oxbow Bend to Antelope Flats, you’ll explore and photograph this high country wilderness with noted nature and wildlife photographer Henry Holdsworth, as he shows you the best the park has to offer. The looming Teton Range provides the dramatic backdrop for your cabin stay in Moose Junction, centrally located near the park entrance and the town of Jackson, Wyoming.

Group size is limited to 12 students, allowing more one-on-one time with the instructor. Call now to reserve your space.

Submit Your Photos Now for Our 2010 Brochure!

We are currently looking for pictures to put in our 2010 brochure. Please submit your photos to be considered right away. We don't pay for the use of photographs, but will always do our best to include a photographic credit. We're always looking for great photos for our Web site, brochure, newsletter and itineraries. Submissions are welcome at any time, but please send your photos NOW to be considered for the 2010 brochure.

We ask for the following when sending a digital submission:

  •   © Participant George J. Michell
Please send no more than eight (8) images per workshop you've attended.

  • Acceptable file formats are TIFF or JPEG.

  • File size should be 300 dpi sized for 8.5 x 11. This equates to a file that is about 8MB. Files that are larger than 24-30 MB may be returned to sender, as they take too long to load on our computers.

  • Please submit 8-bit photos rather than 16-bit.

  • Enhance your photos before submitting them if they need it. What you submit should be a final product, not one that still requires a lot of level or color adjustment. Do not submit photos with layers, as it will increase the file size. If you do some enhancing work, flatten the layers before submitting the image.

  • Name your photos appropriately so that they can be distinguished from those of your fellow students. The preferred format is: First_last_workshopname.jpg. Here is an example: JOHN_DOE_monumentvalley.jpg

  • Download, fill out and submit an Image Submission Form to accompany your photos. View/Download Image Submission Form...

  • Please email your submissions to one of our volunteer trip leaders, Suzanne Mathia at smathia@cox.net. Submissions sent to us on CDs or DVDs will also be accepted, but the disks will not be returned. (See Image Submission Form for mailing address.)

For more information on the image submission process or if you have any other questions, please call 602.712.2004 or toll-free, 1.888.790.7042.

Weekend Workshops: Get More Out of Your Digital Gear

"Shoot-n-Photoshop" Weekend
with J Peter Mortimer and Steve Burger
September 12-13 or November 14-15, 2009

Find out more about this workshop and view itinerary...

Digital images are never right, right out of the camera. At best they need color correction and sharpening, and at worst they need everything! Photoshop guru Steve Burger and former Arizona Highways picture editor J. Peter Mortimer have teamed up to offer this two day digital boot camp where you’ll learn shooting techniques and five Photoshop power moves that will make a night and day difference in your photography!

Photographic technique will be the focus of Day One as you do everything technically and artistically possible to make the best “in-camera” images at the Phoenix Zoo, where there is almost unlimited potential to make great animal pictures. Composition, exposure, histograms, lenses, and camera shooting modes will all come into play. Following the photo shoot is an afternoon critique session, during which each participant will select several images to be "Photoshopped" during Day Two. Each student will work on a supplied computer with Adobe Photoshop CS4. Even though the latest version of Photoshop will be used, all instruction will apply to earlier versions.

Note: All digital cameras are welcome, but students should have a routine understanding of how their equipment functions. While a knowledge of Photoshop is not necessary, it’s important that all participants be familiar with using a computer.

Not only will you hone your photographic skills during this fun weekend, Photoshop will no longer be a mystery! Call our office to register.

Point-n-Shoot: More Than Meets the Eye
with Jeff Kida
October 9-10, 2009 or December 4-5, 2009

Find out more about this workshop...

We think point-and-shoot cameras have gotten a bad rap in the photography world, so we’ve decided to roll up our sleeves and show those digital SLR snobs how point-and-shoots can compete at practically every level!

Take our class and we’ll demystify the icons and menus that seem to have replaced shutter speeds and f-stops. We’ll show you that histogram is not a secret code word for genealogy and that white balance can be a very powerful tool and therefore a good thing to know. We will delve into tripods, self-timers and fill flash. Since this is now photography without film, we’ll discuss the best way to capture your images when shooting, RAW, TIFF or JPEG and then how to best archive them in your computer.

We’ll spend one evening together in the classroom and make a seamless transition to field work early the next morning at the Desert Botanical Garden. After we adjourn for a well-earned lunch at the Garden, there will be a chance to look at work and reinforce your new found photographic techniques. And naturally, we’ll work on light and composition.

This workshop is a lot of fun, educational and very low on the stress meter! Call our office to reserve your space.

Intro to Camera Flash: Environmental Portraits
with Colleen Miniuk-Sperry
October 16-17, 2009

Find out more about this workshop and view itinerary...

Join photographer Colleen Miniuk-Sperry on an exciting weekend workshop aimed at demystifying on and off camera flash. Learn how guide numbers, snoots, and gels can help you make more creative and inspiring photographs.

By working with Native American models, you'll be guided through a step-by-step process to control the quantity and quality of the flash output, learn the differences between ETTL and manual modes, and determine how to balance ambient light with artificial light. Although the focus is on outdoor portraits, the tips and techniques learned during this workshop can be applied to any type of photography — from Nature to Travel to Corporate.

Workshop Prerequisite: It is strongly recommended that attendees have a basic understanding of exposure (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) and exposure control, as there will not be enough time to cover it in this class. Exposure control is considered to be foundational knowledge for operating camera flash.

Call our office to register for this informative workshop on the effects of camera flash.

The first light of sunrise strikes an ocotillo and the tips of a saguaro’s arms at right angles to the camera position, demonstrating the effects of cross light. Photographing in early and late light also can provide shadowy backgrounds for strongly lit subjects, yielding exposures that render richer color saturation.

Photography Tip
Excerpted from Arizona Highways Photography Guide: How & Where to Make Great Photographs

Complimenting the Subject: Cross Light
by Peter Ensenberger, Arizona Highways Director of Photography

Working in the light that occurs at sunrise and sunset will have an immediate and positive impact on your images. And it costs nothing but a bit of sleep.

Photographers call it “prime” or “sweet” light. When the sun is low on the horizon, its light passes through more of the earth’s atmosphere than at any other time of day, softening and diffusing the light and filtering it toward the warm or red end of the spectrum. It’s usually the best of the day’s light, adding richness and warmth to the colors of your subjects.

In the air over Arizona, the dust particles suspended in the air boost the warm color even more than in the moist, green regions of the globe. Because daytime wind kicks up particles that commonly settle during the night, Arizona’s late light is usually warmer than its early light.

AZ Highways Photographt BookMorning and evening also provide the strongest directional light, creating long shadows that can add drama to a scene and make subjects appear more three-dimensional. Low cross light raking over the landscape at right angles accentuates form and texture. With only a few minutes of prime light in which to work, photographers must move quickly to capture their subjects in optimal conditions.
