WEEKEND WORKSHOP - Making Money with Your Camera

with J. Peter Mortimer
September 25, 2010
Cost: $85

© J. Peter MortimerPhotography is expensive, so why not let your camera pay its way? Former Arizona Highways picture editor J. Peter Mortimer can tell you how. Peter has been buying and selling photographs for over 25 years. In addition to having over 300 pictures published in Arizona Highways, he's shot everything from weddings and family portraits to news assignments for publications like Time, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. Using his many years of experience as a base, he'll help you put your creative ideas to work!

In a small give-and-take seminar setting, Peter will show you how to sell your pictures "in your own backyard." You may even change the way you think about how your photography fits in the market place. Just think how many pictures are bought and sold worldwide each day- imagine the many opportunities!

Workshop topics will include:

  • Necessary Equipment (sometimes less is more)
  • The Digital Darkroom
  • Photo-releases (who, what, when, etc.)
  • General Photo Legalities (private property, privacy, police, etc.)
  • What To Charge
  • Invoicing
  • Stock Photography and Photo-agencies
  • Portfolios
  • Websites
  • Creative Sales Ideas (note cards, calendars, posters, etc.)
  • How To Research The Market
  • Working With A Small Printing Company

Even though the photography business is very competitive, there is always room for photographers who are willing to learn and work hard. And don’t forget: One of the most important keys to success is self-motivation.

Itinerary:
Noon to 1:15 pm: Introductions and discussion of creative sales ideas and marketing concepts to include portfolios, websites, stock photography, etc.

1:30-2:45 pm: Discussion of photographic legalities and use of business forms to include releases, invoices, etc.

3:00-5:00 pm: Critique of participant photography and any photo products brought by participants such as calendars, note cards, posters, etc.

One participant said of this workshop, "Great stories of 'real world' experience, with plenty of tips and advice."

Strenuous Rating:
Easy

PHOTO TIP: Shoot vertical compositions as well as horizontal. The vertical frame has a natural dynamic tension and can add drama to the photograph. For editorial uses vertical photographs are better suited to full pages and front covers.
