April 24-25, 2010
Cost: $390
Join travel photographer Colleen Miniuk-Sperry on an exciting weekend workshop, sampling the most intriguing, story-telling sights in the Verde Valley and learning special travel photography tips and techniques along the way.
We’ll board our first-class cabin on the historic Verde Canyon Railroad, which will take us through the rugged Verde Canyon (accessible only by railroad) along “Arizona’s Longest-Running Nature Show.” With access to an open-air car, ample photography opportunities await as bald eagles circle overhead, panoramic views inspire, and with Mother Nature’s help, spring wildflowers bloom in the high desert.
After an exciting 4-hour train ride, you’ll be treated to a wild evening of cowboy dining and fun at the Blazin’ M Ranch as Colleen shares techniques for capturing effective images in the low-light situations we’ll likely encounter.
We’ll then explore the historic mining town of Jerome, where about 450 people call this ghost town home. The streets are lined with historic buildings and filled with people waiting to tell their stories and legends about more prosperous times.
TENTATIVE ITINERARY

DAY 1
- We’ll meet at our designated meeting point in Cottonwood at 9 a.m., starting with a brief slide presentation covering travel photography techniques, an introduction to the sites we’ll see in the Verde Valley, and tips for photographing on the train.
- After lunch, we’ll board our first-class cabin on the Verde Canyon Railroad. During our 4-hour adventure on the train, we’ll be treated to views of bald eagles, rugged cliffs, and hopefully wildflower blooms.
- In the evening, we’ll visit the Blazin’ M Ranch for an all-you-can-eat cowboy dinner and western-inspired dinner show.
- After dinner, we’ll help students download and prepare their images for Sunday’s critique session.
Day Two
- With cameras in hand, we’ll spend the morning roaming the streets of Jerome, known as the “Largest Ghost Town in America.” We’ll also visit the Gold King Mine to see antique trucks and relics from the Old West.
- We’ll return to the conference room to process images, eat lunch and conduct the image critique session.
