PHOTO WORKSHOP - Colorado Wildflowers

with Jim Steinberg
July 21-25, 2005
Cost: $1,195

Jim Steinberg

Journey to a place considered by many photographers to be the "wildflower capital of the world" - the lush alpine meadows surrounding the town of Ouray, Colorado. Focus on the delicate blue Columbine, brightly colored spikes of Indian Paintbrush, blue lupine, yellow Asteracea and sunflowers, pink fireweed and a kaleidoscope of other colorful flowers as they march up the magnificent mountain slopes.

Colorado resident Jim Steinberg is our guide in this remarkable setting, and his goals are to teach students to improve their ability to "see" in nature, to reap greater enjoyment from their time outdoors and to improve their photographic techniques in all areas. We'll have numerous occasions to utilize an array of lenses, filters and reflectors, and much of what we photograph will lend itself perfectly to macro work. For those who like to work with wide-angle lenses, the well-preserved Idarado Mine - with Red Mountain in the background - will be a challenging destination.

In the alpine areas, deep blue lakes surrounded by seemingly endless fields of wildflowers reflect snow-capped peaks and forests in their still waters. Yankee Boy Basin alone is so rich and varied with photo opportunities that we could spend weeks there and not exhaust all the photographic possibilities. Its twin waterfalls are accented with clumps of flowers and bright green moss, and the surrounding hills are covered by shawls of vivid flowers. All these will form the backdrop for your images, and will spur your creativity on this stimulating workshop.

We will have film processed each day, and film critiques will be an integral part of the workshop.

Includes:

  • Photographic instruction
  • JEEP tours to 4WD locations
  • Breakfast snacks
  • Lunches and in-route snacks

GETTING THERE: Participants may choose to drive, or to fly via United Airlines (Denver to Montrose). It will be necessary to rent a car in Montrose if you fly and hopefully carpool for the one-hour drive south to Ouray where our workshop begins.
While we do provide JEEP tours to less-easily-accessed locations, other transportation is not included in the price of the workshop, and is the participant's responsibility.
