Join
our adventurous group on the scenic and seldom traveled backroads
of Utah's Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Awaiting
us on our journey are the multi-colored cliffs of the Grand
Staircase, as well as the intricate redrock canyons of the
Escalante River drainage. This monument encompasses approximately
1.7 million acres of pristine wilderness, and the remoteness
of its many attractions is one of its virtues. While photographic
opportunities will abound, be aware that to get to some of
the best spots requires a fair amount of travel time and hiking.
We'll
spend an afternoon photographing spectacular Grosvenor Arch
and Willis Narrows before capturing sunset light in nearby
Kodachrome Basin, where we'll discover many colorful formations
and unusual spires. Travelling down Hole-In-The-Rock Road,
we'll visit the aptly named "Peek-A-Boo" and "Spooky"
slot canyons. These constricted and labyrinthian canyons have
been carved through streaked Navajo sandstone, and the voluptuous
canyon walls reflect an unearthly glow when light enters the
twisting passageways at certain angles. Side-trips to Calf
Creek Falls, the "Devil's Garden" and other areas
with unique and unusual rock formations will also be likely.
Rounding
out the itinerary are two days of hiking in Bryce and Zion
National Parks. Bryce's towering red-rock spires will amaze
you as we wind along their bases on a hike of nearly 5 miles.
In Zion, the Virgin River Narrows or another appropriate hike
will beckon, as we search out spring wildflowers and interesting
reflection shots.

“The energy level and
enthusiasm of Kerrick James are infectious. He put in a lot
of extra effort to make sure we got to all the right locations
at the right times. I would highly recommend taking a workshop
from him.” — Participant Gary Hintz
