April 25 - 30, 2005
Cost: $2,175
Day One
- Meet at the Best Western Arizona Inn in Page at 5pm.
- Photographer will conduct a slide/print critique of students'
past work and will give an informational slide show.
Day Two
- We'll leave Page early, driving up Cottonwood Canyon
Road to photograph Grosvenor Arch.
- Further north, a short hike of 1-2 miles takes us into
the Willis Creek Narrows to see the interesting strata and
streambed reflections in this slot canyon.
- After lunch at the Narrows we'll explore the color and
unusual chimney spires of Kodachrome Basin, likely staying
there for the remainder of the afternoon.
- Our evening will be spent in Tropic, Utah.
Day Three
- We drive down the Hole-In The-Rock road to do a morning
hike into Dry Fork Coyote Canyon, and attempt to enter Peek-A-Boo
and Spooky slot canyons. The photographer is scouting in
early April to verify conditions. The morning hike is about
3 miles, and involves a hike on slickrock, down a sandy
hill and into a flat wide wash where the slots are. The
hike out is about 300-400' of vertical, but if you're in
decent shape you will be fine.
- An afternoon hike takes us into Davis Gulch to see Broken
Bow Arch, a spectacular arch best lit by mid to late afternoon
light. This hike is longer, about 4 miles RT, but is not
difficult, being mainly a walk down into a shallow canyon,
following the sandy wash around cottonwood trees.
- Late shoot in Devil's Garden, depending on how long we
spend at Broken Bow Arch.
- Evening at the Boulder Mountain Lodge.
Day Four
- Shoot sunrise from the Burr Trail a few miles E of Boulder.
- Hike Calf Creek to spectacular Lower Calf Creek Falls,
a 5-mile hike.
- Drive to Bryce for golden hour and sunset shoot.
- Spend the night at Ruby's Inn, near Bryce.
Day Five
- Sunrise shoot from the rim of Bryce Canyon.
- A morning hike of several miles, less than 5, but it's
steep going out, and the elevation is fairly high, about
7,000'. Participants may be acclimated pretty well by that
time.
- Late afternoon through sunset shoot at the natural amphitheaters
of Cedar
Breaks, from a stunning vantage point over 10,000 feet in
elevation!
- Evening in Cedar City at the Best Western El Rey Inn.
Day Six
- Virgin River Narrows or comparable hike in Zion National
Park. The photographer will decide which trail we'll be
best suited for, and that will depend on the spring conditions,
which he'll know after his scouting trip.
- Return to Page with a few stops along the way likely,
depending on how long we stay in Zion. Rooms are reserved
for tonight in Page and we recommend leaving the following
day.
