Arizona
has some of the most well-preserved ghost towns in the country
and this weekend we'll visit several of the best. We'll walk
the once boisterous and often violent streets of Ruby, now
eerily quiet and deserted. We'll explore towns like Harshaw,
Lochiel and Duquesne, whose weathered ruins give us a faint
glimpse of their one-time prosperity
and colorful past. Everywhere we'll find interesting textures
to photograph, from the peeling paint of a ragged doorframe
to the bullet-riddled walls of Tombstone's old theatre. The
haunting beauty of these towns and Richard’s instruction
on composition and exposure will stay with you long after
your camera is put away.
Day
One
- We'll leave Arizona Highways promptly at 8am.
- The day will be spent in the areas south of Tucson, making
a quick stop at the mission of San Xavier del Bac before
heading to Ruby ghost town to explore its extensive ruins
in depth.
- Our evening will be spent in Nogales, Arizona.
Day Two
- Our path today will take us over some bumpy roads to
Harshaw, Lochiel, Duquesne and Kentucky Camp.
- We'll make a quick stop in Fairbank before stopping for
the evening in Tombstone, perhaps catching a show or shootout
late in the day.
Day Three
- Up early for sunrise as it hits the deserted streets
of Tombstone, we'll grab an early breakfast and move on
to our last ghost towns nearby. They will include Gleeson,
Pearce and other ghost towns along the Ghost Town Trail.
