PHOTO WORKSHOP - Photographer's Whales and Wildlife Cruise

with Kerrick James
January 14 - 21, 2006

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should we bring as far as cameras, lenses, etc?

You can expect opportunities for close-ups (ex. seashells), landscapes and seascapes, wildlife very close and at a distance, (whales, sea birds), etc.  Kerrick would bring, and is bringing, lenses from 14-300mm.  This is for 35mm film format, but he is bringing the rough digital equivalents as well. A light tripod could be useful, though might not be needed.

Will there be a PC or notebook available to review our photos?

There will be no PC workstations on board, so bring your own storage device or laptop.  Kerrick is working on a MAC, so will have his Powerbook to download to, and demonstrate from.

Do you have an outline or brochure that tells how the workshop will be presented?

This workshop is an active in-the-field demonstration event.  Kerrick will show images of Baja California on the first night, showing what you may expect to encounter, weather and wildlife permitting.  Later in the week he will show a longer presentation on Travel Photography, show specific examples, and take questions.  There will be some handouts on lighting, composition, etc, and you are encouraged to bring some samples of your best work for Kerrick to critique.

Any recommendations on clothing?

Bring shorts, light pants, light hiking/walking shoes, water shoes, a light jacket and/or windbreaker.  Sunscreen is a must, plus wet/dry clothes you can wear in a small boat or in the sit on top kayaks.

How much emphasis will there be on digital photography?

It appears from the questionnaires we have received that many people are using digital only.  Please keep in mind that composition and lens selection will be the main emphasis, rather than image handling and digital workflow. It is the creative process on how to best capture the spirit of the land and sea that will take precedence over technical aspects of camera function. However, both Kerrick and our on-site Arizona Highways Photo Workshop volunteer are adept with digital cameras and IF YOU BRING YOUR CAMERA MANUAL will likely be able to help you with certain technical questions. Kerrick will also be looking at everyone's images as the trip progresses, making suggestions and imparting as much info as possible.
