PHOTO WORKSHOP - Day of the Dead & Kino Missions

with Jeff Kida
October 30 - November 3, 2006
Cost: $1,425

Jeff Kida

Join photographer Jeff Kida and a historian from the Southwest Mission Research Center on a photographic, architectural and cultural pilgrimage to northern Mexico during the Day of the Dead ceremonies. This time of year is one honoring the spirits of deceased relatives. The streets and churches of the small towns come alive with colorful activity, as vendors ply their wares and commemorative altars and graves are adorned with flowers. As the people joyfully celebrate the eternal cycle of Life and Death, a multitude of festivities will provide us with many vivid scenes to photograph.

Jeff MckeeverOur journey will concentrate on the three main locations of Magdalena, Caborca and Oquitoa, Mexico. Portrait opportunities will abound, from Magdalena's street vendors to people bringing flowers, wreathes and ribbons to adorn the graves in Caborca's large cemetery. Many people don't mind having their photos taken if they are asked, but we of course must respect their space, spirituality and any requests not to photograph. In Oquitoa, the Day of the Dead ceremonies are conducted in a quieter, more intimate way than in Caborca, and the cemetery becomes ablaze with candles in the evening.

Besides having many chances to photograph incredible portraits, along the way we'll also have the chance to photograph a series of graceful adobe churches built by early Franciscan missionaries. The beautiful 17th-century missions we'll visit may include: San Xavier del Bac, Tumacacori, Magdalena, San Ignacio, Pitiquito, Tubatama, Oquitoa and the mission of Caborca. Our increasing insight into the history and spirituality of this part of the world will inform our image-making, as we capture the delicate features of these wonderful missions. In a number of cases, we've made special arrangements to have access to the church interiors, as well as exteriors.

Includes:

  • RT transportation from Phoenix
  • Lodging
  • Photographic instruction
  • Lunches and snacks
  • Permits & border fees
  • Donations to the missions
  • Historian fee
