PHOTO WORKSHOP - Day of the Dead & Kino Missions

with Jeff Kida
October 30 - November 3, 2006
Cost: $1,425

Jeff KidaDay One

* Meet in Phoenix at 7:30am for an 8am departure.

* First stop is at the Arizona Highways building for a short Powerpoint presentation by the photographer and critique of students' past work.

* Drive to Tucson, where we'll visit San Xavier Mission and meet our historian to learn about the mission's cultural significance.

* With special permission we hope to be permitted to photograph inside the mission after it closes. Jeff will provide his insight into how to shoot the interior and make use of available light.

* The evening will be spent in Nogales.

Day Two

* In the morning we'll visit Tumacacori Mission, where a guide will give us insight into the historical and cultural reasons for the mission's existence.

* Lunch will be in Nogales, AZ and we should cross the border in the early afternoon. This may take some time, so please be patient with the process.

* Our photographic opportunities will be centered on the mission of San Ignacio, and potentially the nearby fields of marigolds.

* We'll have dinner at our hotel in Magdalena, and hope to have Dr. Valenzuela stop by to tell us about the significance of the Day of the Dead ceremonies.

Jonathan PeifferDay Three

* We'll either photograph the mission of Magdalena and the surrounding plaza at sunrise, or spend the morning at the San Ignacio cemetery.

* After brunch we'll make the long drive to Caborca.

* Lunch at our hotel will be followed by a siesta. We'll need the rest since we'll be capturing late light on the Caborca mission and street scenes nearby into the night, as the Day of the Dead celebration takes to the streets.

Day Four (THE DAY OF THE DEAD)

* Sunrise at the Caborca cemetery will be one of the highlights of the workshop. Be prepared for wonderful portrait opportunities, as well as scenes of prettily decorated gravesites.

* After breakfast we'll return to the Caborca mission, hoping to gain access to both the interior & the roof.

Jeff Mckeever* A stop to photograph the interior at Pitiquito will be followed by photography at the Oquitoa mission from just before until well after sunset.

Day Five

* After a late breakfast we'll leave for a tour of Tubatama mission.

* We'll take advantage of a lunch stop in Magdalena to do a little shopping before the drive home.
