October 1 - 5, 2007
Cost: $1,625
Day One
- We'll begin loading gear at 7:30am and will depart Phoenix by 8am.
- Flagstaff's San Francisco Peaks will give us our first
hint of color, with their sprinkling of golden highlights
deep within the folds of the mountains.
- Lunch will be at the historic Cameron Trading Post.
- We'll reach the Lodge by late afternoon, giving us time
to enjoy sunset light settling over the canyon.
- The evening closes with an instructional slide show presentation
and a review the next day's itinerary.
Day Two
- We'll be up early to explore the constantly changing morning
light close to the Rim.
- After lunch we'll visit Marble Flats and spend the afternoon
among the sunlit alpine meadows found near Widforss Trail.
- We'll photograph sunset along the Transept Trail before
dinner at the Lodge.
Day Three
- This morning we'll photograph Angel's Window at sunrise.
- Early afternoon will find us at Point Imperial - the highest
point on either rim - for outstanding views of Mount Hayden
and Nankoweap Canyon.
- At sunset we'll be near Cape Royal, one of the few overlooks
from the North Rim where the Colorado River, a mile below,
may be seen.
Day Four
- Sunrise will be at Marble Viewpoint, after which we'll
travel to the East Rim Viewpoint, arriving about 8am.
- After a midmorning drive along the Rim we'll return to
the East Rim Viewpoint to relax and enjoy box lunches.
- A drive along the West Side Road should take us through
stands of quaking aspen and evergreens.
Day Five
- We'll return to Bright Angel Point, Transept Trail or
another appropriate spot for our final sunrise shoot.
- We'll check out by 8am, boarding the bus for our return
to Phoenix. We plan to take a side trip to Lee's Ferry at
a point where sheer vermilion cliffs channel the wandering
Colorado River.
- Lunch will be at the Marble Canyon Lodge or Cameron.
- We should arrive back in Phoenix by early evening.

TIP: To darken the skies and to remove reflections off of rocks and foliage, I occasionally use a polarizer. Optimum polarization is when the light source is 90 degrees from the direction you are pointing your camera, i.e. side lit. But when the sun is directly in front or in back of the direction your camera is pointed, it renders no effect at all. - Chuck Lawsen
