with Gary Johnson
April 12 - 15, 2007
and October 18 - 21, 2007
Cost: $1,350
This workshop is the most unique offering we will present in 2007. For more than a thousand years, the Hopi have thrived on three boulder-strewn mesas overlooking a beautiful, desolate, homeland. It can be an arduous but peaceful life, where survival is an ancient art. Come along with Arizona Highways photographic contributor Gary Johnson and our Hopi guide and host, Debbie Drye, a life-long resident of Oriabi, on a unique and memorable visit to this picturesque land. We will visit Keams Canyon, scenic Coal Mine Canyon and the ancient villages of Walpi, Moenkopi and the oldest continuously occupied village in the Western Hemisphere, Old Oriabi. Here we’ll learn about Hopi cultural and artistic traditions, getting to see highly skilled artisans such as potters and silversmiths at work. We have arranged to photograph at most of the locations we visit, however the Hopi have the final say when it comes to photographing their land, their people and their customs. While we have done our best to obtain special permissions in advance, we must respect Hopi customs and any particular prohibitions that may arise. This workshop will be an outstanding opportunity to see and hopefully photograph the beautiful landscapes and people of Hopi, as well as purchase handmade crafts.
