September 29 - October 3, 2008
Cost: $1,675
Day One
- We'll begin loading gear at 7:30am and will depart Phoenix by 8am.
- Flagstaff's San Francisco Peaks will give us our first
hint of color, with their sprinkling of golden highlights
deep within the folds of the mountains.
- Lunch will be at the historic Cameron Trading Post.
- We'll reach the Grand Canyon by late afternoon giving us time to enjoy photography of aspens lining Route 67 and sunset at Bright Angel Point.
Day Two
- We'll be up early to explore the constantly changing morning
light at
Vista Encantadora
and later at the East Rim Viewpoint, as well as enjoying a presentation by our instructor.
- We'll
spend the afternoon among the sunlit alpine meadows found near the Widforss Trail, after eating a sack lunch on location.
- There will be an opportunity to walk and photograph along the 1.5 mile Transept Trail to Bright Angel Point (or return by bus to Bright Angel Point for those not wishing to do the hike) before
dinner at the Lodge.
Day Three
- This morning will find us at Point Imperial - the highest
point on either rim - for outstanding views of Mount Hayden
and Nankoweap Canyon.
- After looking at student photos in the Community Center and having lunch, we'll travel to Cape Royal, one of the few overlooks
from the North Rim where the Colorado River
may be seen. Sunset's here are phenomenal.
Day Four
- We'll be up early this morning for sunrise at Angel's Window and Cape Royal.
- After our morning shoot and breakfast, there will be another group critique of student work at the Community Center.
- In the afternoon we'll photograph evergreens and quaking aspen lining the roadsides nearby, with a sunset shoot at Point Imperial.
- Our group's farewell dinner will be at the Grand Canyon Lodge.
Day Five
- We'll return to Bright Angel Point, Transept Trail or
another appropriate spot for our final sunrise shoot.
- We'll check out by 8am, making stops along Route 67 to photograph aspens, as we are able.
- Lunch will be at the Marble Canyon Lodge or Cameron.
- We should arrive back in Phoenix by early evening.

TIP: To darken the skies and to remove reflections off of rocks and foliage, I occasionally use a polarizer. Optimum polarization is when the light source is 90 degrees from the direction you are pointing your camera, i.e. side lit. But when the sun is directly in front or in back of the direction your camera is pointed, it renders no effect at all. - Chuck Lawsen
