PHOTO WORKSHOP - Best of the West

with J. Peter Mortimer
May 7 - 12, 2008
Cost: $2,150

Come along as we visit the most popular sights and best photographic locations found in Northern Arizona. Phil Gaffney Our path north takes us first to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, to stand in awe as we look across this amazingly picturesque chasm. Nothing can prepare you for your encounter with the South Rim - the vastness of the panorama is simply overwhelming. The wonderfully maze-like Slot Canyons of Page are also on our itinerary. In the middle of the afternoon, when the angle of the sun is just right, the light bounces off the walls of the narrow sandstone canyons, creating an impressive display of purple, red, orange and yellow tones that will amaze and beguile you.

Phil GaffneyThen it's on to Monument Valley, to experience the extraordinary vistas where ancient windswept mesas have eroded into the narrow buttes and distinctive "monuments" that give this valley its name. As the journey continues, we will photograph Spider Rock and the stunning pre-Columbian cliff dwellings found within Canyon de Chelly. Within Canyon de Chelly, the towering canyon rim in some places overhangs the valley floor by more than 100 feet, instilling a sense of awe as we pass in shadow far below. We will see several astounding pictographs depicting early canyon explorers. Sites such as Newspaper Rock and White House Ruin will also reveal petroglyphs pecked long ago into these mineral-stained canyon walls. After brief visits to Hubbell's Trading Post and Coal Mine Canyon we'll return through Sedona, for a stop at the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon, and one of Arizona's most beloved locales, Red Rock Crossing. The image of Cathedral Rock reflected in Oak Creek is an Arizona icon. Sated by photography and with an array of memorable images by which to remember our journey, we should return to Phoenix late in the evening.
