with J. Peter Mortimer
May 7 - 12, 2008
Cost: $2,150
NOTE: This workshop by its nature spends a lot of time traveling from one great location to another. New for 2008, we have added a full day to the trip to give you more time at each location.
Day One
- We'll depart from Phoenix at 8am, so be sure to be at our departure point by 7:30am to load gear into the vehicle.
- We'll make our way to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to enjoy a panoramic sunset view of the canyon. Bring a graduated neutral-density filter to alleviate the contrast between the brightly illuminated sky and the deep shadows.
Day Two
- Morning finds us at a South Rim overlook to photograph early light angling into the Grand Canyon.
- By afternoon we'll be in Page, Arizona, where we'll visit the luminous labyrinths of the Slot Canyons.
- Peter will conduct a slide critique in the evening, so bring up to 12 slides or prints for review.
Day Three
- Morning finds us above the Colorado River, taking advantage of the early light at Horseshoe Bend.
- We'll take another tour through Antelope Canyon this afternoon for one last opportunity to photograph the luminous slot canyons.
- We continue on our way to Monument Valley, where we'll photograph an incredible sunset at the Mittens.
Day Four
- Today will be spent enjoying a full-day tour of Monument Valley. Our Navajo guide will show us the vast sand dunes and powerful silhouettes that dominate this incredible landscape. We'll visit the Mittens, Totem Pole, Ear of the Wind, Sun's Eye and John Ford Point, and may even have the opportunity to visit a Navajo hogan to see first-hand how traditional rugs are woven.
Day Five
- Sunrise will be spent photographing one more time in Monument Valley.
- Moving on to Canyon de Chelly, we'll travel by way of open-top, six-wheel drive vehicles on a rugged tour to Spider Rock, at the end of the canyon, stopping at the many ruins along the way.
- Time permitting, we'll photograph Spider Rock from the Rim above, as well.
Day Six
- Our first stop on our return to Phoenix will be Hubbell's Trading Post, with its quaint store, worn wooden floors, weathered barns and glimpses into early ranch life.
- After lunch we will leave to photograph Coal Mine Canyon, another unusual and spectacular landscape formation.
- Making our way back to Phoenix, we'll make two last stops in Sedona to photograph both the picturesque Oak Creek Canyon and Red Rock Crossing, where we'll have a spectacular view of Cathedral Rock from streamside near sunset.
- With such a full day of photography scheduled, we anticipate being back to Phoenix in the late evening, and recommend out of state visitors return home the following day.
