Don’t let the name fool you, Death Valley is alive with photographic potential, and few locales on the globe can rival its diverse, serene and wondrous landscape. Of primary interest here are the gently rolling sand dunes in early morning and late evening light, which can yield terrific expansive panoramas as well as photos of smaller details in the environment. It is a world that is both timeless and ever changing, as winds and rain help build, destroy and reshape intricate patterns in the terrain.
Here you'll discover at Artist’s Palette – with its splashy display of reds, pinks, yellows, oranges and browns – that the chaotic geology of this region has resulted in stunning rock formations well suited to a photographer's lens. Badwater offers you a chance to photograph the Panamint Range reflected in the extremely saline water. Then it’s on to Devil’s Golf Course, the remains of a shallow lake that evaporated about two thousand years ago. Everywhere you look the crazy pattern created by crystallized salt divides the land into a jagged jigsaw puzzle, providing an opportunity to practice using a strong foreground in your photograph.
At the Death Valley Sand Dunes, the texture of the wind-sculpted sand catches changing light, allowing you to make image after surreal image. Here you will learn how warming filters can enrich the already beautiful subtle colors. The short walk into Mosaic Canyon, a twisting canyon of white marble and polished rock walls will allow the photographer to find intimate compositions in the patterns of the rock and isolate parts of the canyon walls against the blue sky.
Included in this workshop are trips to the Alabama Hills and Mono Lake, to photograph wonderful arches and tufa columns. Let George Stocking guide you to these and other favorite locations during this 6-day excursion.
