with David Muench
September 3-12, 2008
Cost: $7,550
We’re taking you to Alaska at last, and who better to be your guide than David Muench!
DAY ONE
We'll meet in Anchorage for a presentation by David, then go out for a lavish 4-course dinner to start the workshop off right.
DAY TWO
We'll transport you to Talkeetna, stopping along the way according to David's feelings about good light and locations. In the afternoon we're scheduled for a 3-hour private jet-boat tour of the Susitna River, where we hope to get terrific views of wildlife and our first photographs of Mt. McKinley. We'll explore other photographic opportunities around Talkeetna for the balance of the day. In the evening David will conduct a critique of your photographs.
DAY THREE
We'll make our way to the entrance to Denali National Park, stopping along the way if opportunities present themselves. After an early lunch we'll be picked up at the Denali Park Rail Station to begin our trip into the park. We hope to stop a few times on our way to Camp Denali, though any stops we make may necessarily be short, since a picnic dinner on our way into the park and a dessert reception are planned.
DAYS FOUR TO NINE
We'll enjoy the hospitality of Camp Denali during the remainder of the workshop, in remote cabins 90 miles within Denali National Park. At this time of year the tundra changes color, and that color should be at its peak. At David's direction, buses will take you out in various directions each day to visit parts of the park boasting spectacular scenery.

Founded in 1951, Camp Denali is Alaska’s original vacation lodge and nature center and is a unique wilderness retreat for those seeking an in depth experience in the sub-arctic. Cabins are situated along a ridge with commanding views of Mt. McKinley, and each is furnished with a wood stove, propane lights and hotplate, hand crafted quilts and Alaskan artwork on the walls. A central shower facility is located within a 3 to 7 minute walk from each cabin. Guests can also use the natural history resource center, complete with binocular microscope, herbarium, and library. You don't have to be capable of scaling Mt. McKinley to enjoy Camp Denali. All you need is the ability to negotiate uneven ground at your own pace, an enthusiasm for walking, rain or shine and a spirit of adventure.
In keeping with their mission of helping guests enjoy the natural history and wilderness of Denali National Park, Camp Denali provides daily guided nature outings and hikes. The staff of knowledgeable naturalists assists guests in first hand explorations of the Alaskan landscape, searching for wolves, moose and caribou. You may choose to go on some of these outings when not out exploring with David.
At night David will conduct a number of image critiques. Some nights you may also choose to avail yourself of many of Camp Denali’s other activities, including nightly programs on various aspects of Denali's natural and cultural history, including birds, mammals, wildflowers, tundra ecology, geology, mountaineering, land use and natural resource issues. In addition to guided activities, mountain bikes, canoes and fishing equipment are also available.
With a full week within the park, you will have a chance to see and experience all the best this location has to offer!
DAY TEN
Fully sated by the tundra, mountain vistas, wildlife and good company, we'll rise early to return to the Denali Park Rail Station. From there we'll board the train for our return trip to Anchorage. The observation car may give us more opportunities to photograph Mt. McKinley, which is visible at a few spots on the southbound route, especially from Broad Pass. Rooms tonight are included in the workshop so you can return home the following day.
PLEASE NOTE:
Due to rooming restrictions at Camp Denali, there will be no single rooms available during our seven evening stay at that location. However you will be able to have a single room on the remaining three nights of the workshop.
Also, the cancellation policy for this workshop is different than for most of our other workshops. It is posted here.
