TENTATIVE ITINERARY
DAY ONE
- We will meet at 7:30 am to start loading gear into the bus, leaving promptly at 8am. We will pick up our photographer and guide as we leave town.
- Lunch will be in Flagstaff, followed by a visit to the Museum of Northern Arizona for a talk on Hopi history and etiquette. There will also be a potential stop at a local gallery.
- Sunset at Coalmine Canyon offers us our first chance to photograph landscape at Hopi.
- Dinner in Tuba City will be followed by checking into our rooms at the Hopi Cultural Center.
DAY TWO
- A sunrise shoot gives us another view of Coalmine Canyon from a different location.
- After breakfast we'll be enjoy a talk about Hopi Katsinam (Kachinas) by artist Wallace Hyeoma a traditional Hopi Katsinam carver, and have a chance to purchase "Don’t Worry Be Hopi" products.
- Lunch will be followed by a portrait session.
- We will then be led on a private walking tour of Old Oriabi. Our guide is the matriarch of this village, which was founded in 1145 A.D.
- A presentation on dry farming techniques by "Pahana" Joe Day will follow, hopefully in a nearby Hopi cornfield.
- Dinner back at the Hopi Cultural Center will give us a quick break before an evening photo critique.
DAY THREE
- Today will be devoted to photographing a number of Hopi artisans at work and in their homes. Visits to a silversmith and potter are scheduled.
DAY FOUR
- An early morning session with Eagle Dancers along one of the Hopi Mesas will be a wonderful start to our last day here.
- A guided tour of the village of Walpi wraps up our time at Hopi, with one more portrait session with a hoop dancer in Flagstaff scheduled for later in the afternoon.
- We expect to return to Phoenix anywhere between 6-10pm, depending on how many photo opportunities there are throughout the day.
