PHOTO WORKSHOP - Rafting the Grand Canyon

Ralph Lee Hopkinswith Ralph Lee Hopkins
April 30 - May 11, 2008
Cost: $3,820

(includes $2,800 for outfitter services)

Join us for the most extraordinary expedition you may ever experience, as we chase soft light through the depths of the Grand Canyon. The rush of the water is exhilarating as the boat skims through the mighty Colorado River, pushing its way deeper into the canyon and through the surging current. Create life-long memories and photographic treasures as you brave the narrow gorges and tumbling cascades that epitomize the spirit of the river. As John Muir once said: “Rivers flow not past but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell.”

Ralph Lee HopkinsSkilled river guides and a professional photographer familiar with running the Colorado will accompany you every mile of the way, taking care of your needs so you can concentrate on your Participant Derek von Briesenphotographic pursuits. If it has rained recently, there will be fantastic grottos filled with drizzling seeps tucked into the side canyons, and at sunrise and sunset the cliffs catch fire with an unearthly glow. At the confluence of the Little Colorado, when the water is not muddy from run-off, the mineral-laden turquoise water contrasts sharply with the dark green of the Colorado. Here you'll have time to play - floating in lifejackets and wading in the shallow pools. Ralph Lee HopkinsSome of the best times are found off the river, hiking side canyons in search of a personal vision of this incredible place. At Sockdolager you will experience a gorge that Powell referred to as the "knockout punch." Photographing these thunderous rapids will be a unique challenge. Gliding on the river a roar in the distance will remind you that you are approaching Lava Falls where the river drops 37 feet over an ancient lava flow in less than ¼ of a mile.

Participant Edward LockartGrand Canyon Discovery, licensed concessioner of Grand Canyon National Park, is the outfitter for this workshop.  With their help, camps will be selected each night for their proximity to photo opportunities. On a typical day, you'll rise early to hot coffee to help you work in the early light. Then it's back to camp and breakfast before loading the boat. You'll stop for lunch and explore the quiet pools and fascinating petroglyphs found in many of the side canyons. The Canyon is a place where potential images are found at every bend in the river. Whether they're recorded on film or forever burned into your memory, the Grand Canyon will remain with you long after this trip is over.

Besides the on-river portion of the workshop, you will also have 2 days of instruction with Arizona Highways photographer Ralph Lee Hopkins.  He'll conduct photo sessions which will cover basic photographic technique, Photoshop for photographers, using histograms, creating good compositions, and more.  He'll also conduct a portfolio review of up to 10 of your images.  Once the workshop is over, you are encouraged to share your photos with him on our photo sharing site so he can critique them and offer you suggestions on how to make your images even stronger.
