PHOTO WORKSHOP - Preposterous Landscapes

with Gary Ladd
October 18 - 23, 2008
Cost: $1,895

Of all the astonishing wilderness areas sculpted by the Colorado River, none surpasses the beauty and diversity of the landscapes that surround Page, Arizona. On this workshop we will raft the sole surviving segment of Glen Canyon from the dam to Lee's Ferry, which shelters an area of quiet solitude within its sheer 1,000-foot slickrock walls. Here, the cobbled river sandbars, rippled beaches and stunning reflections will kindle our desire to record images of the river's graceful beauty. We plan to have lunch at petroglyph beach, first photographing the cobble bar just upstream. Visits to Ferry Bench, the backwater at mile 12, Waterholes or Fall Canyons may also be in order. The wind-hollowed amphitheaters and natural arches of the canyon are among the exciting subjects Gary will point out to you on the journey as you gather photographs in this geologic wonderland.

The following day we will hike into nearby Cathedral Wash, a short tributary of the Colorado River where speckled, pockmarked and thinly banded limestone is great for close-up work. The winding limestone narrows are filled with eroded benches, steps and other formations. The floor of the wash eventually broadens to reveal the picturesque sandy beach of Cathedral Rapid. We will linger here amid this boulder-strewn riparian area to photograph this intriguing site. The first half of the hike is easy and then it gets more strenuous as you negotiate the benches and steps mentioned above. The hike is about 2½ miles round trip, but most people Gary has taken there have been able to make it.

The photogenic Slot Canyons and Lake Powell lie just upstream. We will explore the lake by speedboats one day. The lake level is at the lowest point it's been in many years, making it likely that we will see some formations that will disappear as lake levels rise. Rounding out the workshop are trips to Upper and Lower Antelope canyons, which are always a treat.

Arizona Highways’ Gary Ladd, a seasoned wilderness photographer, will provide his personal attention and professional expertise on this workshop. He proposes bringing your favorite lenses, including a wide-angle lens such as a 20mm–35mm, graduated neutral-density filters in either 1 or 2 stop strengths, as well as a tripod. He will be emphasizing the effective uses of wide-angle lenses, selecting forceful foregrounds and carefully calculating exposure, and will conduct a number of critiques of students' work. Gary has concentrated his photographic work on the Glen Canyon area for the past 25 years. He lives in the area, and his training in geology, remarkable teaching skill and unequaled familiarity with the photo locations make him the perfect instructor for this workshop.
