From the unsurpassed alpine wildflowers of the Crested Butte area to the highest alpine tundra of Rocky Mountain National Park, you’ll experience the best of Colorado's high country and the most spectacular scenic byways on this unique workshop.
Sunrise may find you amid fields of wildflowers near Washington Gulch, photographing Mt. Sopris or traveling to the headwaters of the mighty Colorado River. At Independence Pass you’ll take in spectacular panoramic views of the Rockies at sunset, and at Lost Lake you’ll savor wonderful views of Beckwith Mountain. You’ll photograph the historic "painted ladies” in Leadville, America's highest incorporated city, and in Glenwood Springs, you can explore the historic downtown or soak in the natural hot springs.
Meandering past the confluence of the Colorado and Blue Rivers, we’ll work our way up river to Grand Lake and end with a drive over Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, traveling above the tree line to the windswept tundra with its unbelievable views and outstanding wildflower exhibitions.
Jim Steinberg, who’s spent 35 years exploring Colorado, and who’s known for his easy-going and effective teaching style, will be your expert guide to see and photograph these majestic Colorado landscapes. Jim’s knowledge of the Rockies ensures that we’ll be in the right places at the best times, and then he’ll show you how to capture each one at its scenic best.
Our adventure begins with a drive to the small mountain town of Minturn where we catch the Top of the Rockies National Scenic and Historic Byway, offering us extraordinary views of mountains and high country meadows. If we’re lucky, we might see nimble big horn sheep on the rocky slopes. And we’re sure to see a profusion of summer wildflowers set against snowcapped peaks.
Cool temperatures and pure mountain air together with the rich history and scenic wilderness make this the perfect summer photo workshop. This 75-mile stretch of highway, which seldom drops below 9,000 feet, takes us over Tennessee Pass to the historic town of Leadville with lots of opportunities to stop and photograph along the way.
We’ll also have time to explore the quaint, historic mountain town of Crested Butte and relax sore muscles in the natural hot springs at Glenwood Springs. The highlight of the workshop comes on Day 5 when we finally reach Rocky Mountain National Park and make the drive up Trail Ridge Road, reaching the pass at more than 12,000 feet above sea level. The adventure ends with a farewell dinner in the town of Estes Park.
This workshop is truly a “Rocky Mountain High” with its nonstop panoramic views and mountain passes. Working our way around central Colorado, we’ll stop at so many scenic locations you might lose count. If you’ve never seen the Rocky Mountains up close and personal, the workshop gets you there and back with spectacular photographs to help you savor the experiences.
