PHOTO WORKSHOP - High Peaks of Colorado Itinerary

with Jim Steinberg
July 6 - 12, 2009
Cost: $2,395
Volunteer Trip Leaders: Lori Lause and Dean Hueber

Jim SteinbergDay One

  • We will be meeting in Lakewood, CO. at the Comfort Suites. We ask that you arrive by 5:00 p.m. as we would like to have dinner as a group followed by an orientation from your instructor. If you are flying into Denver International Airport you can use the SuperShuttle either by making reservations online at supershuttle.com or by going to their counter in the main terminal when you arrive. The rate per person is $29 one-way.

Day Two

  • Drive to Minturn and the beginning of the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway.
  • Working our way up over Battle Mountain Pass, we will stop at Homestake Creek and the Eagle River to photograph.
  • Our next destination is Camp Hale, the training ground for the U.S. Army’s famed 10th Mountain division.
  • We’ll then proceed over Tennessee Pass—stopping at the moving memorial to our troops on top—and on to the richly historic town of Leadville, America’s highest incorporated city. After lunch and we’ll spend some time photographing the “pink ladies,” as downtown is known.
  • Then, we'll follow the Arkansas River to CO 82, which will take us to the top of Independence Pass (12,095 ft. elevation), where we‘ll have spectacular panoramic views of the Rockies for sunset photography.
  • We’ll spend the night in Carbondale.

Day Three

  • After enjoying sunrise over Mt. Sopris, we'll then head up the Crystal River on the West Elk Loop byway to the town of Redstone and its old coking ovens.
  • From there, we’ll head to the “town” of Marble, home of the stone cut for both the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
  • We will then head up and over McClure Pass, where we’ll stop for a picnic lunch.
  • After lunch we will proceed down one valley and then up into Kebler Pass, giving us ample time to enjoy the incredible scenery and wildflowers.
  • Our day will conclude in the small and picturesque town of Crested Butte.

Day Four

  • We will travel up Washington Gulch for sunrise over the valley in the midst of fields of wildflowers.
  • Having had time to explore Crested Butte and do some shopping, we will drive back over Kebler Pass, stopping at Lost Lake and its wonderful views of Beckwith Mountain.
  • After our picnic lunch, we’ll head back over McClure Pass with the goal of reaching Glenwood Springs.
  • Ending our day early will allow everyone time to enjoy historic downtown and soak in the natural hot springs for a leisurely evening.

Jim SteinbergDay Five

  • An early morning will find us on the road through marvelous Glenwood
Canyon to State Bridge and the Colorado River Headwaters Byway. Taking the Trough Road up along the river will afford the opportunity to see and photograph a part of Colorado seldom visited by outsiders.
  • Along the way there will be stops at Radium and The Pumphouse, where the Colorado exits Gore Canyon.
  • Meandering our way past the confluence of the Colorado and Blue Rivers, we will work our way up river till we end our day in Grand Lake, at the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Day Six

  • Our workshop has an exciting finish as we head into Rocky Mountain National Park and up and over Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in North America (12,183 ft.).
  • Stops will vary depending on light and weather.
  • Our last day will end in Estes Park, where we’ll gather for our farewell dinner.

Day Seven

  • We'll return to Denver International Airport for those flying out today.
