Trekking to the top of Hunt’s Mesa is a pilgrimage every photographer should make. From here, Monument Valley’s incredible expanse stretches to the horizon, punctuated only by the valley’s massive iconic monoliths. Try to recite the names of the recognizable formations spreading out below you: Totem Pole, Yei Bi Chei, Eye of the Sun and King on His Throne. They’re all there.
Your workshop instructor, Navajo photographer LeRoy DeJolie, can help you name the rest, and may also tell you the Navajo legends behind the names. Our outfitters will transport us via four-wheel drive vehicles to the top of Hunt's Mesa, where you can gaze down upon the vast and varied landscape of Monument Valley. Our private camp on top of the mesa — provided by Crawley's Monument Valley Tours — will provide all the necessities, including a campfire dinner. Our time here will be the highlight of the trip.
After two days on and around Hunt's Mesa, you’ll return to the valley floor to tour both Monument Valley and Mystery Valley’s back roads, with stops at all the best locations including the Mittens, Teardrop Arch, Ear of the Wind and much more.
Hunt’s Mesa is a place few others go, and the sunrises and sunsets are particularly dramatic and photogenic in this panoramic setting. Come experience why LeRoy calls it one of his favorite places in all Navajoland.
