Come with us as we photograph winegrowing and winemaking in the Willamette Valley—the heart of Oregon’s famed wine country. We’ll visit a number of estate vineyards during peak harvest time, where we’ll follow the grapes from the vines to the fermentation vats. It’s a busy time of year, and photographic possibilities will abound. We’ve arranged special access to these magical vineyards, which contribute to the area’s abundance of scenic beauty.
After several days inland we’ll then journey to Newport, which is home to one of the busiest fishing ports on the Pacific Coast, historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, and miles of unbroken sandy beaches. Photographer J. Peter Mortimer will work closely with individual students, assisting them to capture spontaneous moments among the people and beautiful landscapes of Oregon.
This unique photo workshop combines an appreciation of fine wines, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to photograph the grape harvest and the beauty of Oregon’s coastal landscape. You’ll visit winery estates and have access to photograph their stately manor houses, wine cellars and cask rooms. And, of course, we’ll stop in their wine tasting rooms to sample the fine Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris varietals that thrive in the lush, cool valleys of the Willamette Valley. During the grape harvest, we’ll experience warm days along the banks of the Willamette River.
Our focus shifts to the abundant photo opportunities of Oregon’s central coast for the second part of the workshop. The quaint town of Newport, home to one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in Oregon, serves as our base for the exploration of beaches, birdlife, pristine scenery and two lighthouses dating to the 1870s. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, Oregon’s last remaining historic wooden lighthouse, is the oldest structure in Newport. And Yaquina Head Light, at 93 feet, is Oregon’s tallest lighthouse.
Also on the workshop schedule is a visit to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, rated as one of the America’s top ten aquariums. More than 15,000 marine animals reside there, including sea otters, sharks, octopuses and tufted puffins. A walk through the aquarium’s clear underwater tunnel surrounds you with thousands of fantastic tropical fish.
This workshop is truly a taste of Oregon’s best. You’ll avail yourself of Peter’s photographic expertise and insider’s knowledge of Oregon’s wine country and central coast. Reservations will fill up quickly for this unique workshop, so book yours soon.
