PHOTO WORKSHOP - Portraits of Tombstone Photoshop Seminar

J P Mortimerwith Steve Burger
and J. Peter Mortimer

February 16 - 19, 2009
Cost: $1,095
Volunteer Trip Leaders: Vern West, Hal Tretbar, and Dan Fink

Come wander down historic Allen Street where Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Bat Masterson once walked. You can squint your eyes and imagine how the town must have looked back in the glory days of the old west. Here, saloons outnumber restaurants, stagecoaches still rumble down the street, and locals often wear six-guns along with their Stetsons, Kerchiefs and rawhide boots.

On your visit to this Wild West town you'll explore the famous Bird Cage Theater, known as "the wildest, roughest, wickedest honky tonk between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast" standing much as it did over 100 years ago. You’ll see the famous "bird cages" where ladies of the night sold pleasures to cowboys and miners. If you listen closely they say that you can still hear the sounds of laughing, yelling, and the honky tonk piano. The scents of cigar smoke and whiskey still permeate the walls.

You can also retrace the steps of the Clantons as they made their way across Fremont Street, or the Earps and Holliday as they approached the OK Corral, where the most famous gunfight of all time took place. You'll also stroll through famous Boothill Cemetery, a burial ground with over 250 graves that include the bodies of town pioneers, murderers, horse thieves, bank robbers and at least one poor soul that was hanged even though he was innocent. The Markers are labeled with classic epitaphs such as “Here lies Lester Moore, four slugs from a 44. No Les, No More.” The tales and stories of the residents still swirl on the hot desert winds.

JPMortimerThe gunfire might have stopped over a century ago. The silver might be gone. But music is still ringing from the saloons and men and women dressed in full costume of the day still walk in the middle of the street. You might find Wyatt Earp sipping a cool drink at the bar, Dance Hall Girls giggling and laughing on the corner, or old crusty cowboys just lookin’ for some trouble. Today, Tombstone is alive and ready for you to make memories of your own, as well as classic portraits that capture a piece of our past. Photographer J. Peter Mortimer will help you find wonderful light to capture these "period personalities" during prearranged and spontaneous portrait sessions.

Steve BurgerYou'll also have the opportunity to work in a casual classroom setting alongside one of the best print makers and Photoshop teachers in the Southwest, Steve Burger. Steve is knowledgeable, energetic and enthusiastic. He’ll teach you how to make friends with Photoshop—and in his no nonsense, cut to the chase style—show you ways of transforming your simple captures into stunning images and prints. You'll come away from Steve's class understanding how Photoshop acts as a digital darkroom and how to make adjustments to bring to print the image you had seen in your mind.

After importing your images from the morning and evening shoots into the computer, you'll learn step-by-step how to maximize the impact of your photographs and how to print them. Steve helps to take the mystery out of the process and gives you tools you can immediately start using to achieve consistently good results on your own. Each student will receive a 16x20 print of their favorite image and a take-home copy of the instruction book developed by Steve for use in his Photoshop classes.
