Carved by wind and water through layers of sandstone, the remnants of ancient ocean floors form what are known as slot canyons. On this workshop, we'll explore several of the slot canyons near Page, Arizona, where unexpected beams of light and fanciful whorls of color give us the opportunity to make striking and memorable photographs. In Upper Antelope Canyon, one of the most intriguing and photogenic canyons in the world, we'll marvel at the narrow canyon walls that rise 100 feet above us. At the right time of day, its walls glow in vibrant purples, reds, oranges and yellows. Neighboring Jack Jordan Lower Antelope Canyon stretches through a series of small chambers, large amphitheaters and precipitous drops, where every turn of the canyon offers new and exciting scenes to photograph. Arches and keyhole formations can be found within.

The area around Lake Powell also affords us other opportunities. Poised high above the meandering Colorado River, Horseshoe Overlook challenges the photographer as the gray predawn light slowly warms the sandstone cliffs of this deep gorge. We'll also have the chance to capture the drama of sunrise striking a fantasy landscape of magenta sandstone buttes and the Vermilion Cliffs in the area known as "Little Cut". At the Paria Bluffs near sunset, the mysterious, gnome-like "hoodoos" are a photographic treat, as are the unforgettable fleeting moments of sunset at Waterholes Canyon. Students submit more outstanding photos from this trip than any other, a testimony to the inspiration the canyons convey.
