Arizona’s White Mountains are a special summer retreat from the heat. The locals call it “God’s Country.” Cool temperatures, clean mountain air and afternoon showers are part of daily life in this high country getaway.
Our trip starts with a drive from Phoenix to Hannagan Meadow. The welcoming caretakers at Hannagan Meadow Lodge will play host to our photo workshop. The historical lodge and cabins will be our base of operations for exploring the pine and aspen forests, lush meadows, babbling streams and placid high-country lakes of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. We expect to spot lots of wildlife on this trip, and if the summer storms are active, we could see plenty of colorful mountain wildflowers in bloom. Beautiful Hannagan Meadow is just across the road from the lodge, where most evenings elk and deer come out into the meadow to graze and play. And the rustic pole fence around the meadow creates a perfect foreground for pastoral scenes on foggy mornings.
Our workshop instructor, Arizona Highways Director of Photography Peter Ensenberger, knows the secrets of this country from the many days he’s spent traveling the back roads and hiking the trails. You’ll discover the natural wonders of the White Mountains, where shooting locations might include the Mt. Baldy Wilderness, Little Colorado River, Three Forks of the Black River, Lee Valley Recreation Area, Bear Wallow Wilderness and the Reno Lookout Tower. And if Mother Nature cooperates with an active monsoon season, we’ll see it all with dramatic towering thunderheads accentuating deep blue skies. Come along to see and photograph this high-country paradise.
