Explore the wild lands of south-central Alaska on this one-of-a-kind workshop combining landscape and wildlife photography; along with boat trips, scenic flights and wilderness hikes. Kerrick James will be our instructor on this Alaskan journey. Kerrick is an adventure, travel, and destination photographer with over 200 book and magazine covers to his credit. His passion is traveling the world’s wild places creating compelling images, and he has led many Arizona Highways workshops.
Our journey begins in Juneau with a flight to Glacier Bay. This is the world’s largest protected marine sanctuary where we will enjoy a full-day tour along the Bay. Expect to find tidewater glaciers, icebergs, and marine life. Bald eagles are also plentiful here. Additional days offer us many more amazing photographic opportunities.
Point Adolphus is prime humpback whale feeding area that we will explore. Prince William Sound is surrounded by spectacular views of the rugged Chugach Mountains and is where we will most likely see some of the many whales, sea lions, seals, porpoises, eagle, terns, and bears that call this place home.
In Wrangell-St. Elias, our expert wilderness guides will lead us on a hike along a lupine-lined trail where we have the potential of finding bears and seeing 16,390-foot Mt. Blackburn, the highest peak in the Wrangell Mountains. Our destination will be the Root Glacier where we’ll learn crampon techniques for an easy hike on the glacier to capture scenes of shimmering blue pools and rushing rivers of glacial melt-water.
We’ll also visit Kennecott National Historic Landmark, now a ghost town, but once the site of one of the richest deposits of copper ore ever found in the United States. We’ll wrap up this amazing week by riding the Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic on its most scenic run from Anchorage to Seward, spending an afternoon whale watching in Resurrection Bay, and photographing the numerous glaciers and inlets of Kenai Fjords National Park.
Plan on bringing long glass and expect an active week of adventure in Wild Alaska! This workshop involves the option of a number of moderate to strenuous hikes. Please see our trip itinerary for the full daily schedule and more of Kerrick's terrific photos of the areas you'll be visiting.
