  • Participants should plan to arrive in Juneau in time to make the afternoon flight to Gustavus. We'll travel together on this flight as a group. For those having to arrive in Juneau early, suggestions for things to do and places to shoot can be provided.
  • We'll have an introductory dinner and our first critique at Glacier Bay Lodge, Bartlett Cove starting at 7 p.m.

Day Two

  • We’ll spend all day touring and shooting in Glacier Bay National Park.
  • Dinner and lodging at Glacier Bay Lodge.
  • A short hike before or after dinner from the lodge is possible.

  • This morning we’ll be watching whales from a boat at Point Adolphus, a prime humpback feeding area.
  • After lunch we have the option of kayaking in Bartlett Cove, or doing an easy loping five mile round trip hike to the Bartlett River Estuary for waterfowl and possibly bears and coyotes on the beach.
  • We’ll return to Juneau for dinner and then connect to Anchorage for the night’s lodging.

Day Four

  • After a possible morning critique session at our hotel, we’ll fly from Anchorage to Valdez.
  • An afternoon boat tour of Prince William Sound is scheduled.
  • Dinner and lodging back in Valdez.

Day Five

  • The next morning will find us on a 2-1/2 hour drive from Valdez to Chitina, with great scenery en route. Chitina is the end of the paved road and is 50 miles west of McCarthy. McCarthy is the tiny gateway town on the edge of massive Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. At 13.2 million acres, this park is the size of six Yellowstones!
  • After arrival and check in at McCarthy, we can do a guided tour inside the 14-story Mill Building, recently restored by the National Park Service.

Day Six

  • St. Elias guides will lead us on a hike on the Root Glacier for 4-6 hours starting at 9 a.m to shoot great ice and alpine scenics.
  • In the afternoon there may possibly be flight-seeing over the Wrangells (peaks over 16,000’ and many glaciers!) as an extra-cost option. Those who choose to not fly can stay in McCarthy and relax or join Kerrick on a possible hike on the Fourth of July trail.
  •  We’ll spend the night in McCarthy.

Day Seven

  • If we don’t do a second late hike on Friday, then we will do a morning hike of perhaps five miles.
  • In the afternoon, we’ll return to Chitina, then drive back to Valdez.
  • From Valdez, it’s back to Anchorage, where we’ll have our final dinner and spend the night.

Day Eight

  • © Instructor Kerrick JamesThis morning we board the Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic train to Seward.  We’ll have breakfast on the train, and shoot mountain scenery along the way.
  • We then join the Kenai Fjords National Park Wildlife and Glacier Cruise for lunch and the rest of the afternoon. The fjords are lovely photo opportunities and whale sightings often occur.
  • We’ll return to Anchorage on Coastal Classic, arriving in the late evening where we will officially end the workshop. Rooms this night are included in the price of the workshop. You may choose to fly back home the next day, or continue your Alaska adventure on your own!
