with Henry
Holdsworth
January
20 - 26, 2009
Cost: $3,425
On most days we
will be up before dawn to take advantage of early light and
will stay active and shooting until late evening. In
January that means about 9 hours in the field, often with
box lunches to sustain us. You'll want to bring PLENTY
of batteries and keep them near your body to keep them from
discharging. For maps of the area, you may wish to click
here.
JANUARY 19TH
We will have rooms blocked in Bozeman, MT for your convenience, though they are not included in the workshop price.
DAY ONE
Henry will start our day with a slide show at 9am. One of his first and most important lessons will be how to
meter for snowy scenes. At noon, participants will
be picked up in Bozeman and transported to Gardiner, which
is located just north of Yellowstone's North Entrance. We'll arrive in Gardiner by 3pm for a late afternoon shoot
and another slide session by a local big animal expert.
DAY
TWO
We'll spend the
day making our way from Gardiner to Cooke City, stopping along
the way for photo opportunities. Notable will be the
time we spend in the Lamar Valley, where wolf packs, elk herds,
coyotes and bison tend to congregate. Be sure to bring
your spotting scopes and long lenses! Renting a 500mm
if you don't already own one would be a real treat if you
have a tripod capable of holding it. Our evening will
be in Cooke City, where we will conduct a critique of people's
past work. Please bring 6 examples of your work to share,
whether it's digital files, slides or prints.
DAY
THREE
The full day will
be spent in the Soda Butte and Lamar Valley areas, where high
densities of animals are always found in winter. After
a full day of photography we'll spend another evening in Cooke
City, which is in the Northeastern corner of the park.
DAY FOUR
Today we backtrack
through the Lamar Valley to the steaming geyser basin of Mammoth
Hot Springs. Animals sometimes congregate along the warm terraces,
and snow builds up around bubbling geothermic pools here,
sending off large columns of steam. We'll spend the
evening once more in Gardiner.
DAY
FIVE
Boarding our private
snowcoaches, we'll take all day to make our way south to the
Old Faithful Snow Lodge, deep within the heart of the park.
We'll stop at warming huts for breaks now and again, and for
any photo opportunities that arise. Stops at Roaring
Mountain and the Norris Geyser Basin are likely, as well as
stops to photograph animals we encounter along the way.
That's likely to be around every bend in the road! Not
to be missed, we'll spend this night and the following night
at the cozy and distinctive Old
Faithful Snow Lodge.
DAY SIX
Another full-day
snowcoach tour may take us to the Lower Loop in order to see
the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and other outstanding
viewpoints. We may also visit Hayden Valley, which is another
haven for a variety of birds and animals.
DAY
SEVEN
We'll spend the
morning in the Old Faithful area, taking our time with the
geysers and major attractions like Old Faithful and Grand
Prismatic Spring. Our snowcoach will then take us to
West Yellowstone past the Firehole River and on to Bozeman
by the early evening. We recommend you book rooms in
Bozeman for this night and fly out the next day.
