The workshop departs from and returns to Grand Junction, CO. Departure is at 8:00 a.m. and we will be loading gear at 7:30 a.m. If you are from out of town we recommend you book lodging for the night before the workshop begins to ensure you are on time for departure and also the night the workshop ends as you will probably return late in the afternoon or early evening and we would not want you to miss your flight home if you are delayed for any reason.
TENTATIVE ITINERARY
Please be aware that shooting locations stated in this itinerary may change. Each day we will determine which locations are best based on lighting conditions, in the hopes of giving you the best opportunities possible.
Day One
- Leave Grand Junction, Colorado at 8 a.m. bound for Moab, Utah.
- On the way, we'll see the Colorado River against the towering walls of Westwater Canyon and likely make stops at Devil Dog Bend and Hittlebottom Recreational Area.
- After checking into the hotel and lunch, we will have an introductory slide show by the photographer and a question and answer session.
- Early evening and sunset photography will shoot “The Spectacles” with the La Sal Mountains as the background from Balanced Rock, in Arches National Park.
Day Two
- We'll set out early to explore North Arch, South Arch, Turret Arch and Double Arch Trail in Arches National Park.
- We'll then visit the Tom Till Gallery in Moab, followed by an afternoon critique of student images. We may also stop to see the petroglyphs at Wolfe Ranch.
- In the late afternoon and toward sunset we'll spend our time photographing stunning Delicate Arch.
Day Three
- This morning we'll go to the Devils Garden, and then take an easy hike past tall sandstone fins to Landscape Arch, Pine Tree Arch, and Tunnel Arch.
- For the evening shoot we'll head up Route 128 a short distance, looking to capture reflections in calm areas of the Colorado River and the setting sun on rock walls.
Day Four
- We'll visit the Park Avenue overlook in Arches National Park in the morning, then continue on to Courthouse Towers, Balanced Rock, and Garden of Eden, staying about an hour at each.
- We'll return to Moab for lunch and our second critique session followed by a rest period so participants can download images or just relax.
- Late afternoon we’ll hike up to a spectacular distant viewpoint of Delicate Arch with a deep canyon below.
Day Five
- There will be an early morning shoot at Mesa Arch Green River Overlook.
- On our way to Grand Junction we may photograph sheer red sandstone walls framing the Colorado River.
The workshop is expected to return to Grand Junction by approximately 5:00 pm. Again we recommend out of town visitors book lodging for this night and return home the following day so you do not risk missing your flight in case we are delayed for any reason.
