PHOTO WORKSHOP - High Peaks of Colorado Itinerary

The workshop departs from and returns to Montrose, CO. If you are from out of town we recommend you book lodging for the night the workshop ends as you will probably return late in the afternoon or early evening and we would not want you to miss your flight home if you are delayed for any reason.

Day One

  • (Monday, July 5) Meet in Montrose at 5 p.m. for orientation and dinner.

Day Two

  • (Tuesday) After loading the vans, we'll head for the South Rim of the Black Canyon on the Gunnison.
  • We’ll then photograph Sunrise and early morning at the Canyon. Next we will proceed to Morrow Point where we'll meet the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway and take CO 92 north along the Black Canyon up to the Crawford Needle with views of the Anthracite Mountains.
  • Proceeding on the West Elk Loop we’ll head over Kebler Pass where we’ll have a picnic lunch and end our day in Crested Butte.

  • (Wednesday) We’ll have the day in Crested Butte, the Wildflower Capital of Colorado starting with a sunrise shoot.
  • Returning to town for breakfast, there will be ample time to wander and photograph this historic and wonderfully photogenic old mining town.
  • After our first critique session we’ll head out later in the afternoon to enjoy the fields of wildflowers that abound in the area.

Day Four

  • (Thursday) After our sunrise shoot we’ll breakfast and then head down river to Gunnison.
  • From there we’ll move west still on the West Elk Loop along the Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado’s largest.
  • After cresting the Cerro Summit we’ll head up the Cimarron River to Owl Creek Pass high in the Uncompahgre Mountains for another unforgettable picnic spot.
  • Finally we’ll wend our way over Owl Creek Pass down to Ouray where we will spend the evening.

  • (Friday) This morning we’ll arise bright and early for a jeep ride high into the San Juan Mountains to enjoy the incredible views and photograph the spectacular wildflowers.
  • After critique and lunch in Ouray we’ll go on the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway over the Dallas Divide with its breathtaking views of the Sneffels Range to take the historic Last Dollar Road into Telluride where we’ll spend the night.

Day Six

  • (Saturday) We’ll explore the ghost town of Alta high the San Juan Mountains (11,800’) in the morning and then wander the wonderful Victorian and Western downtown of Telluride before we head down the San Miguel River where we’ll find the Unaweep-Tabeguache Scenic Byway.
  • Proceeding south we’ll have a last picnic lunch along the Dolores River. Then it’s down into Colorado’s own canyon country as we move down the phenomenal Dolores River Canyon on our way to Gateway.
  • We’ll spend our last night at the new Gateway Canyons Resort where well have the opportunity to enjoy John Hendrick’s historic car collection at the Gateway Auto Museum and then have our farewell dinner at the Paradox Grille.

Day Seven

  • (Sunday, July 11) After an optional early morning shoot we’ll have one last critique and then head back over the Uncompahgre Plateau to Montrose where we’ll bid adieu.

NOTE: There are rooms reserved for this night, but are not included in the price of the workshop. We recommend that you reserve a room and fly home the following day, as we may not arrive in Montrose until late in the evening.

The workshop is expected to return to Montrose by approximately 6:00 pm. Again we recommend out of town visitors book lodging for this night and return home the following day so you do not risk missing your flight in case we are delayed for any reason.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT SUGGESTIONS: Polarizing filters will help reduce sheen on leaves, and will also help reduce hazy skies at this altitude. A reflector can help inject light into dim groves of trees, as appropriate.
