with Kerrick James
July 19-23, 2010

Cost: $2,695

© Instructor Kerrick James To participate in this workshop, a valid passport is required for travel into Canada on Day 4 and on the return into the United States on Day 5. For more information about passports, please visit the U.S. Passport Website.

This workshop is rated as moderately strenuous due to the nature of the activities on this workshop. Students should be active and in good physical condition for this workshop.

The workshop departs from and returns to Kalispell, MT beginning at 9:00 am on the first day with a presentation from your photographer. If you are from out of town we recommend you book lodging for the night before the workshop begins to ensure you are on time for the presentation and to allow yourself time to acclimate to the elevation.

Please be aware that shooting locations stated in this itinerary may change. Each day we will determine which locations are best based on lighting conditions, in the hopes of giving you the best opportunities possible.

Day One

  • The workshop begins with an orientation, slide presentation and critique session.
  • In the early afternoon, we'll drive to Avalanche Creek where we'll have a 1 mile hike and stay to shoot for about 90 minutes, before going over Logan Pass to Sunrift Gorge for a short hike to a panoramic view of peaks and St. Mary’s Lake.
  • We'll photograph Wild Goose Island & St. Mary Lake at sunset and spend the evening at Rising Sun Motor Inn.

Day Two

  • We will start the morning either with sunrise on St. Mary’s Lake or in the flower fields of Two Dog Flats.
  • After breakfast back at the Rising Sun, we'll hike on Hidden Lake Trail to overlook (3 mile RT) or to Hidden Lake (6 mile RT).
  • In the afternoon we'll hike to St. Mary and Virginia Falls (3 mile RT), and walking the Highline Trail looking for mountain sheep and goats (1 mile RT).
  • Sunset will likely find us at Swiftcurrent Lake in the Many Glacier area.
  • The historic Many Glacier Lodge will be our resting place this evening, as well as our dinner location.

Day Three

  • Sunrise at Swiftcurrent Lake will give us a different look at this picturesque location.
  • After breakfast we'll depart on the 8:30am hiker’s boat, crossing Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes, bound for a hike on the Grinnell Glacier Trail (7 miles RT if trail is fully open). We’ll enjoy a box lunch trailside.
  • In late afternoon light, we’ll head to Fishercap Lake, Redrock Falls, or Swiftcurrent Lake to capture mountain reflections and waterfalls in the Many Glacier area.
  • We’ll stay at the Many Glacier Lodge again this evening.

Day Four

  • Sunrise will find us at Swiftcurrent Falls where the early morning light reflects off this fast moving waterfall.
  • After breakfast a critique session will be conducted this morning at the Many Glacier Lodge (9:30-12:00).
  • Then it’s on to Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada where we will hike in search of flowers and wildlife.

Day Five

  • Sunrise in Waterton Lakes will be followed by a return to the States.
  • We'll take a midday drive to Logan Pass for another session from 1-4 p.m. on the Highline Trail, our best chance for mountain sheep and goats.
  • The workshop ends in the evening back in Kalispell, MT after a farewell dinner.

Out of town visitors please plan on making travel arrangements for the day after the workshop ends as we will be having our farewell dinner upon our return to Kalispell and rooms for this night are included in your workshop fee. If we are delayed in our return, you will not risk missing your flight home.
