We will begin this workshop with a drive from Phoenix to Chinle, AZ. On a private tour we will explore the 26 miles of Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto with their red stones rising from the canyon floor 30 to 1,000 feet. Where the varnished canyon walls make for stunning images and the Anasazi ruins evoke thoughts of a culture from a bygone era.
You may see Navajo homes and farmland and Navajo sheepherders tending their flocks. You will hear some of the legends surrounding the area, stories of the ancient cultures that called this canyon home. There will be a trip to Chinle Basin providing the possibility of crafting some very dramatic images and numerous opportunities to make beautiful portraits with several Native American models.
After two days in Canyon de Chelly we will move on to Window Rock, AZ for the world-renowned Navajo Nation Fair, where hundreds of native American dancers and rodeo riders from throughout the US and Canada gather each year. The possibilities are endless for unbelievable portraits and action shots of dancers adorned in buckskin shirts, porcupine-quill hair roaches and eagle feather headdresses, not to mention the rodeo action of “wooley riders”, bronc riders, ropers, and the list goes on.
LeRoy’s deep spiritual connection to his homeland will inspire students nearly as much as the scenery and fantastic photo opportunities.
